I love the play on words where the people of Nazareth are offended by Jesus: who has "mighty works done by his hands" (referring to miracles). And yet, any carpenter works by his hands. I think it's evident that Joseph, the adopted father of Jesus, was relatively prosperous. He could afford a donkey to take Mary to Bethlehem. He has an occupation that allows him to flee to Egypt when the life of the infant is threatened. Ironically, Jesus' ministry begins on a donkey going to Bethlehem and ends on a donkey going into Jerusalem.

Freedom for what? As Luther says, we are saved and forgiven by Christ’s death and resurrection with a telos/goal/aim in mind: “so that I may may be His own (i.e., Christ's) and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him (i.e. obey, worship, love, offer right sacrifices to Him) in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness.” So. Free from the enslaving power of sin to live in accord with the everlasting, perfect will and law of our King: Christ. Which is basically Luther drawing on God’s words to Pharaoh through Moses and applying them to Jesus: “Let my people go that they may serve me.”

Thank you! I've been needing this as a defense against the "cooperate" brethren. Not sure if Robert Capon said this but "the layers of an onion represent our sin and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the pulling." Only God searches the heart, not man.

Seems that Jews say that the law of Moses is the rock of the law. So Peter being the rock of church means build church on the rock of the law. The law is the words of god so the word (law/rock) was with god at beginning of genesis.

The woman at the well was married five times, but not in this lifetime. Jesus was speaking of her past lives, reincarnation. We reincarnate. We received "the veil" and do not remember our past lives, but Jesus knew her soul before it was put in the the body, from before she was born. We all have past lives but do not remember. It's our soul's journey.

WRONG. U made it 0.48sec before the reason people are leaving church & anything in the Book, cause u try to BS people with this "worldview". Water into wine is a METAPHOR. Women break their water sack that protects the baby. A 1st born child ... A "virgin" birth will make her bleed. Wine is blood. Holy Grail her womb. Church fathers & pope & bishops & pasters have lost ALL credibility . Especially in the genetic age where your lies are on full display.

The short answer is, "No." The long answer is, "No, of course it's not. Why would you think it is? There's nothing in the text about any kind of ritual or ceremony. It's teaching about the same thing as the Lord's Supper is about, but it's not about the Lord's Supper."

I think it's worth pointing out that, Lamentations is an orchestral piece having 5 chapters, the first 2 chapters have 22 verses each which begin consecutively with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Chapter 3, the one Erick does a wonderful job reviewing, is the musical highlight expressing hope and having 66 verses being bundled three verses to a repeating Hebrew letter. Chapter 4 has 22 verses with the same format as chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 5 is the finale, a chapter of chaos where foreigners rule Jerusalem, with 22 verses but without the organization of previous chapters. Even so, Jeremiah ends chapter 5 with hope.

Just a thought: God can only be found in the suffering of the cross can also refer to Jesus telling us to take up our cross and follow him. A book that illustrates this well is "Hinds Feet on High Places" in which the one on a spiritual journey is given Sorrow and Suffering as companions. It is when she holds their hands tightly she has the strength to get through the most difficult parts of her journey. Having a relationship with God requires continual learning and experiencing and we, as humans don't know how far we can go with this without being pushed by circumstances. A very wise woman has said: We enjoy the good times, but we grow through the hard times. And those are the times we really learn what God is like and experience His faithfulness and wisdom and compassion in ways good times can't teach us.

When Jeremiah said: "My hope is perished from the LORD" , he had reached his lowest point he saw his sins as black as they really are and was convinced that he was lost, cut off from God, dammed. And this is what the true depths of spiritual depression really are. We see ourselves as the lost and condemned, unworthy worthless sinners that we really are. And we are constrained to confess with Peter: "Depart from me; FOR I AM A SINFUL MAN, O Lord." (Luke 5:8) And with Isaiah Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips" (Isaiah 6:5) And with David "I am a worm, and no man ..." (Psalm 22:6) And with Job we must say at last: "I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes" (Job 42:6) Remember O Christian, that when we are under heavy affliction, as was Jeremiah along with the entire nation, we are acutely reminded of our own sins. Recall the what the widow of Zarephath said, who tended to Elijah, when her son died? "What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call MY SIN TO REMEMBRANCE ...?" (1 Kings 17:18) And this feeling of complete undoing and guilt before God, we feel also, when grievous disaster suddenly strikes. "Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. (Ezekiel 36:31) But now the Gospel came back to Jeremiah ... he remembered that Christ would come into the world to bear all his sins away: "This I recall to my mind, therefore have I HOPE. It is of the LORD'S MERCIES that we are not consumed, because his COMPASSIONS fail not. They are new every morning [ie. Continually] Great is THY Faithfulness. The LORD [Jesus] is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him." (Lamentations 3:21-24; Ephesians 2:8, 9) It is due to Christ and Christ alone that Jeremiah had HOPE. And it is due to Christ alone that we too have HOPE, namely through Faith in Christ delivered to be Crucified for our sins and Raised from the dead on account of our Justification. (Romans 4:25) And when the sure HOPE of the Gospel breaks through upon us to our own souls we say with Zephaniah: "For then will I turn to the people a pure language [The Gospel], that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent ... In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me ..." (Zephaniah 3:9, 11) In Christ Jesus our sins have been taken away, the FIERCE ANGER of the LORD has been TURNED AWAY (Psalm 85:2, 3) and we have been cleansed of all our sin (Psalm 51:2, 7; John 13:8, 10; 1John 1:9).

You cannot get things from secondhand revelation from other people. You must quiet yourself before the Lord until you hear his voice directly. This takes away any confusion on any level. When we practice what we do not understand, we live a lie and then the truth is not in us, only a pretender.

Why can't you just try to exposit what this meant to the disciples and to the original hearers? NO NEED to try and find Yahweh here. Jesus is clearly GOD"S SON in the gospel of Mark. Why not stick to what Mark was trying to prove? That Jesus is God's son (messiah), the King of Israel, BUT NOT Yahweh! Yahweh's Son! Divinely enabled and empowered to do great works!

Has this devotional been an encouragement for me today? Yes, it has! Thank you. Thank you for the reminder of 1 Peter 3:15 - “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”. (NIV translation) The Amplified Bible translation helps give us a deeper understanding of this passage: “But in your hearts set Christ apart [as holy-acknowledging Him, giving Him first place in your lives] as Lord. Always be ready to give a [logical] defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope and confident assurance [elicited by faith] that is within you, yet [do it] with gentleness and respect.” While the 2 Corinthians 5 passage, written by Paul, was initially addressed to the Corinthian people, it is just as relevant to each one of us today. Each of us who is a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour has the privilege, the opportunity - indeed the responsibility - to share the Good News of God’s love with those around us, to encourage them in their faith, and to persuade them to come to a greater and deeper trust and faith in God. It is not just for pastors to share the good news of the gospel. It is for each of us as well!
